‘Talent, Diversity, Opportunities’, Malaga Film Festival’s second edition of Spanish Screenings Content, offers renovated content
Animation Day, the creation of Málaga Short Corner and in-person activities in Remake Day, Book Showcase and Music Scorecom are the event’s main new elements
Spanish Screenings XXL is part of the component 'Spain, Audiovisual Hub of Europe' of the Plan for Recovery, Transformation and Resilience promoted by the Ministry of Culture and Sports and the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Digital Transformation.
The second edition of Spanish Screenings Content, one of the areas of focus of Spanish Screenings XXL and part of MAFIZ, the Malaga Film Festival’s industry zone, which will be held between the 13th and the 16th of March with the theme “Talent, Diversity, Opportunities”, offering new activities and renovated content geared at providing value and visibility to the entire professional chain of the audiovisual sector in Spain, the internationalization of Spanish audiovisual productions, fostering the expansion of the networks of contacts of audiovisual professionals and generating new business opportunities.
Morevover, as part of the Spanish Screenings Content program, a delegation of representatives of buyers, programmers and platforms of the audiovisual industry of Asian countries, including South Korea, China, Singapore and Japan, together with international professionals of short and animation films, will come to Malaga thanks to ICEX España Exportación e Inversiones [Spanish Trade Commission]. The objective is that they learn first-hand about the potential opportunities of our industry and create synergies with the sector.
Animation Day has increased its activities with a greater variety of content; Malaga Short Corner has been created to present the new Spanish talent with a selection of recent short films; and Remake Day, Book Showcase and Music Scorecom have extended their scope of action with in-person activities. Furthermore, Spanish Screenings On Tour will continue with the participation in Spain CoproForum of the projects selected in the Perspectives and Screaming sections, with special emphasis on equality and the work of audiovisual professionals, who will have more visibility and communication opportunities. Also includes lectures and round tables.
On the 14th of March, a new impetus will be given to animation with Animation Day, thanks to ICEX España Exportación e Inversiones and the collaboration of DIBOOS. Five of the most recent and noteworthy works in progress, together with one feature film, will be presented to the international industry by their producers (see list at the end of the release). Projects of MIANIMA, a training program for feature film and animation series led by women and geared at female Ibero-American filmmakers, created by the Association MIA [Women in the Animation Industry], will also be presented, together with the conclusions of the MIA 22 Report on the role of women and their representation in the animation sector in Spain will also be presented.
In addition, a round table will take the pulse of the buoyant animation sector and provide a general vision of projects underway, financing, innovation and industry events. Lastly, the Ibermedia Program will present its new line of grants for animation under the IBERMEDIA NEXT project for the application of new technologies to animation.
Malaga Short Corner is a new activity in 2023, consisting of the screening 60 short films of diverse genres and origins to highlight the value of new Spanish talent: Fiction, Comedy, Terror and Fantasy, LGTBIQ+, Documentary, Animation and Andalusian, Catalan and film school productions. The presence of professionals, distributors, buyers and international niche festivals is foreseen. They will have the chance of attending, together with the teams of the short films and other accredited professionals, a series of round tables on subjects of interest for the sector, such as professionalization and new exhibition venues.
The 2023 edition of Spanish Screenings Content will also provide a new impulse to Book Showcase with the presentation of case studies on the adaptation of La Reina del Sur, by Arturo Pérez- Reverte and Zorras, by Noemi Casquet, in collaboration with the SGAE Foundation.
In collaboration with Acorde, a division of Music Library & SFX, Spanish Screenings Content 2023 delves deeper in Spain Scorecom with the panel discussion “Film Music vs Films with Music”, during which composers will share experiences and creative perspectives and will discuss issues such as copyrights and musical supervision.
This year Remake Day, with 37 films with the potential of selling remaking rights available at spanishscreenings.online, includes a panel with the participation of Filmax and Latido Films to discuss the increase of the sale of remakes, and in particular in respect to two of their best-know: Sentimental (Filmax) and Campeones (Latido Films), with the presence of the producers in Italy of the former (Medusa Film) and in Germany of the latter (Constantin Films), both of which were box-office hits in their respective countries.
The event will also be the setting to reflect and discuss issues that affect the diversity, the present and the future of Spanish audiovisual productions: “New Wave, new collaborative production trend that breaks away from established standards”, in collaboration with Catalan Films, during which discussions will focus on new systems of production governed by the collaborative logic in films directed by women, and “The audiovisual consumption of Generation Z”, which will analyze the change of paradigm with the digital creators of Hack MAFIZ Malaga.
Lastly, there will be content in connection with sustainability, financing, future challenges and opportunities of the sector, and Regional Film Hub, Spanish Copro Forum and Hack MAFIZ Malaga will continue, as well as the sections Screenings, Market Premieres, NEO Screenings, Next from Spain, Spanish WIP, Industry Club and Film Library.

Spanish Screenings is the programme for the internationalisation of Spanish audiovisual productions that was given a new impulse in 2022 with a greater diversity of content, including new thematic sections and the vision to include work aligned with the new audiovisual narratives and also enhance the entire professional chain of Spanish audiovisual productions.
In consequence, its new format Spanish Screenings XXL is an international market for Spanish audiovisual productions, a project with more content and more activities adapted to the new challenges of the audiovisual industry, which benefits from the collaboration of the Ministry of Culture and Sports through the ICAA (National Institute of Cinema and Audiovisual Arts) and the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Digital Transformation through ICEX España Exportación e Inversiones (Spanish Trade Commission), the Malaga Film Festival and the Festival of San Sebastian.
