Festival de Málaga launches Hack MAFIZ Málaga, a new event of the film festival’s industry zone

The participants will have to face audiovisual challenges in order to ensure their participation in the festival’s 24th edition.

Festival de Málaga launches Hack MAFIZ Málaga, a new event in its MAFIZ (Málaga Festival Industry Zone) zone aimed at new talent in the audiovisual sector. With the collaboration of the Spanish Institute of Cinematography and Audiovisual Arts (ICAA), this initiative aims to turn the event into a meeting point for young, successful digital content creators and for distributors, brands, media, streaming services and production companies from around the world.

The call for applications to participate in this event is being launched today by Festival de Málaga through a specific page on the MAFIZ website, and will remain open until February 7th. Interested participants must fill out and send an application form with their particulars, and must also provide a one-minute video uploaded to Youtube in which they portray themselves as creators, indicating their target audience and the elements that best define them.

The objective is to select from all the applications 198 young Spaniards and Latin Americans who will go on to the next phase, in which they will participate in the Hackathon (from February 14th to March 14th), consisting of an online challenge. These 198 creators will be grouped into 66 teams of three people who will have to collaborate to develop audiovisual content (series, podcasts, video games) following the instructions of digital creation experts acting as tutor. From all the teams, five will be selected as finalists.

The five teams selected teams will come to MAFIZ Industry Zone of the 24th Festival de Málaga, to be held from the 4th to the 13th of June, where they will have to face a new challenge to create audiovisual content about the event in the open tent Lab. There, they will have the opportunity to dialogue with international co-production companies and funds, media and platforms and other leaders of the Latin American industry.

With Hack MAFIZ Málaga, Festival de Málaga addresses the sector’s efforts to reach new audiences who consume audiovisual content through very diverse channels and have a community identity that requires a much more active dialogue on the part of creators and content producers. The event therefore seeks to create new spaces that will enable regenerating audiences and establishing a dialogue with them and with the creators with whom they identify. This is Hack MAFIZ Malaga’s main priority: to offer the opportunity to accommodate these creators, to get to know them and see them in action, allowing them to interact in a venue of synergies with the different agents of the traditional industry.

Digital creators bring innovation to content production and to the field of distribution and editorial positioning in respect to their community. Knowing and sharing their experience and knowledge provides a differential and synergetic view of the new business models based on social media. Portability, fragmentation, co-creation, collaboration, self-distribution, monetization and new narratives, among others, are key aspects of these new creators’ identity, and also of the event that will bring them together in Malaga.
