Festival de Málaga announces the call for applications for Spanish Screenings 2020, which will be held online from the 17th to the 20th of November

For the fourth consecutive year, this major event for the promotion of Spanish cinema will be held within the framework of MAFIZ, the Festival’s industry area.

Following its postponement in March due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Festival de Málaga will organise Spanish Screenings – Málaga de Cine from the 17th to the 20th of November with an online format. The call for applications to participate in this event is open as of today and until the 17th of October. The 14th Edition of Spanish Screenings, an event conceived as an international promotion platform whose main objective is to foment the sales of Spanish cinema, will be held like the three previous ones as part of MAFIZ (Málaga Festival Industry Zone), the film festival’s industry area.

Spanish Screenings – Málaga de Cine, the sole event of its kind in Spain to boost and promote Spanish films at the international level, is organised by Festival de Málaga and the Malaga City Council, with the collaboration of the ICAA (National Institute of Cinema and Audiovisual Arts), ICEX España Exportación e Inversiones [Trade Commission of Spain], EGEDA [Audiovisual Producers’ Right Management Association] and the Andalusian Regional Government.

In order to adapt to the new circumstances caused by the coronavirus crisis, and in view of the difficulties that exist for international travel, the Malaga Film Festival continues to hold its events in a virtual format. Following the success of the online formats of Málaga Work in Progress (Málaga WIP) and MAFF (Málaga Festival Fund & Coproduction Event), in November it will be the turn of Spanish Screenings – Malaga de Cine, a key meeting point in the film sector’s international agenda.

According to Juan Antonio Vigar, Director of the Malaga Film Festival - Festival de Málaga, the objective is to maintain the Festival’s Industry area as the ideal space to bring Spanish audiovisuals together by means of an event adapted to the circumstances. Given the current difficulties of international travel, in person attendance has been replaced by virtual communication, platforms and online work procedures that allow us to continue advancing towards our objective, which is the promotion, dissemination and international sale of films in Spanish.

During the four days of the market, international buyers, sales agents, festival programmers and producers will be able to view the most recent feature films and upcoming films through the Veo Spanish Screenings platform and the event’s different sections:

- Previews 2020 - Releases 2020: recent Spanish films (produced in the second quarter of 2020 or afterwards).
- Neo Screenings: screenings of our most innovative and daring cinema. We will present the new forms of cinematographic expression that are being created in Spain.
- Next from Spain: screenings of trailers of upcoming releases.
- Spanish Film Library Room: films and TV series produced in the last quarter of 2019 or afterwards.
- Spanish WIP: an area designed to boost the completion of Spanish films in the post-production phase and to foster their dissemination and promotion.
- Malaga Film Festival Winners: films, documentaries and short films that won awards in the 23rd edition of the Malaga Film Festival - Festival de Málaga.

In addition, registered participants will have access to the Industry Club, where information will be provided regarding the list of participants and their contact details for networking purposes, as well as the list of participating buyers, catalogues and other documents of interest.
