Catalonia, protagonist of Territories at MAFIZ, the Malaga Film Festival industry zone

The Catalan delegation will present projects, films and their coproduction incentives to the national and international industry

Catalonia will be the protagonist of Territories at MAFIZ, the Malaga Film Festival’s industry zone. The section, which was created in 2022, has the objective of facilitating the creation of international cooperation networks, to foster meetings of professionals and promote the guest territory’s brand.

The Catalan audiovisual sector will have an ample presence at MAFIZ, with the selection of projects and professionals in its different areas. More than 20 Catalan projects have been selected in the different sections and more than 60 Catalan companies will be present at MAFIZ. 

The proposal also includes the organization of a series of actions to inform about the guest region’s recent cinema, its upcoming projects and the talent that makes their success possible. The delegation, consisting of a substantial representation of the Catalan audiovisual industry, will be headed by Natalia Garriga, the Regional Minister of Culture of the Generalitat de Catalyuna, who on the 16th of March will receive the Silver Biznaga Award from the Mayor of Malaga, Francisco de la Torre.

Catalan productions and talent will be present in MAFIZ’s different sections. The following productions will participate in Malaga WIP Spain: La nit no fa vigília, by Laura Corominas, Laura Serra, Clara Serrano, Gerard Simó, Ariadna Ulldemolins and Pau Vall, Las residentes (esto no es un cuento de verano) / The Residents (This is not a Summer Tale), by Jo Sol Lo carga el diablo / Devil Dog Road, by Guillermo Polo and Sobre todo de noche / Foremost by Night, by Víctor Iriarte. The productions participating in MAFF are: Atlas de la desaparición by Manuel Correa, En otro mundo by Manolo Munguía and No todas las niñas, by Carolina Astudillo. On the other hand, Alberto Dexeus and Sandra Gallegos will participate in Malaga Talent and Hack Malaga, respectively. In addition, three Catalan productions will be presented to the industry in Regional Film Hub:  Quest, by Antonina Obrador, Un sol radiant, by Ariadna Fortuny and Mònica Cambra, We Die by Rebeca Sànchez and À procura da estrela, by Carlos Martínez-Peñalver, the coproduction with Galicia that will be presented by this Autonomous Community. Lastly, 17 short films will be presented in the new section Malaga Short Corner, nine in the general program and six in the program ShortCat 2023, geared at the promotion of Catalan short films fostered by Calatan Films, the internationalization brand of the Catalan Institute of Cultural Enterprises (ICEC) for Catalan audiovisual productions.

In order to highlight the vitality of  Catalan audiovisual productions and the possibilities of collaborating with its audiovisual companies, on March 15th there will be a presentation entitled “Catolonia: territory to produce and coproduce: presentation of the lines of support and the Catalan presence at MAFIZ”, during which all the grants available for the audiovisual sector will be detailed, together with the promotion actions designed by the Catalan Institute of Cultural Enterprises (ICEC), of the Department of Culture of the Generalitat de Catalunya, to boost the sector. Likewise, they will have a stand at the Industry Club accessible for all the professionals accredited at MAFIZ. In addition, Catalan Films will be collaborating with Spanish Screenings Content at the round table “New Wave: films directed by women mark a new collaborative production trend that breaks away from established standards”.

A sign of the dynamism of the Catalan audiovisual sector is the presence of Catalan productions and talent at the Malaga Film Festival, with more than 40 productions.

Lastly, the director Carla Simón will receive the event’s Malaga Talent - La Opinión de Malaga Award and Agustí Villaronga, who recently passed away, will be paid a posthumous tribute by the Festival.
