Imanol Uribe (born 28 February 1950 in San Salvador, El Salvador) is a Basque Spanish film director, screenwriter and producer. Raised in Spain from childhood, he studied journalism and film direction at the Escuela Oficial de Cine in Madrid before founding his own production companies (Zeppo Films, Cobra Films, Aiete Films) to retain creative control. Uribe gained early recognition for tackling socio-political themes, especially around the Basque context and justice, and later diversified into adaptations of literature and historical dramas. His film Días contados won multiple Goya Awards (including Best Director and Best Screenplay), and he has received major festival honors such as Golden Shells at San Sebastián for Días contados and Bwana. Known for blending narrative depth with political insight, he remains a significant figure in contemporary Spanish cinema.
